Mother Protests Marriage

I was at my local Family History Center yesterday looking on some films I ordered for some records, when I came across this:

Oct. 24, 1841. This day ..... Mr. George Maddocks of Hope and Miss Nancy Pease
of Appleton.

The above intentions of marriage were denied by Miss Nancy
Pease who made her personal appearance, took down the notice
and committed it to the flames of the fiery furnace.
attest Henry Meservey, Town Clerk

All of us ladies got a real laugh out of this. I hope you enjoy it as well. It makes you wonder what Mr. George Maddocks did to make Miss Nancy Pease so angry. Did they ever get married? Who knows.

No they didnt! George was married first to Nancy's sister, Susan T. Pease. I wish i knew more about him because he may be my 4x great grandfather!

We also laughed about the record - she must have been MAD!

Wow thanks for sharing. I knew there had to be a story to that. I'll look and see if I made a copy of it and send it to you.
